Understanding Your State Pension Forecast Before Retirement

Checking your national insurance record early can help you plan income and avoid surprises when you reach retirement age.

Why Your State Pension Forecast Is Worth Checking Now

Your State Pension is the foundation of most retirement income plans. Yet many people reach their mid-sixties without knowing exactly what they will receive. A forecast is free, takes minutes to request, and can reveal gaps in your National Insurance record while you still have time to fix them. Think of it as a financial health check for your retirement.

If you are over 55, the sooner you check, the more options you have. You might discover you are just a year or two short of the full amount, or that you can boost your pension by delaying your claim. Knowing the numbers now helps you decide whether to work a little longer, save more, or adjust your spending plans.

How to Get Your State Pension Forecast

The quickest way is through the government's online service. You will need to verify your identity, usually with a Government Gateway account. If you prefer, you can request a forecast by post or over the phone. The forecast tells you:

  • How much State Pension you could get
  • When you can claim it
  • Whether you can increase it

It also shows your National Insurance record, which is the engine behind your pension. For the 2025/26 tax year, the full new State Pension is £230.25 a week. That is just over £11,970 a year. To get the full amount, you normally need 35 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions or credits.

Understanding Your National Insurance Record

Your National Insurance record is a history of your contributions and credits. You build qualifying years through paid work, self-employment, claiming Child Benefit for a child under 12, or receiving certain benefits. If you have been contracted out of the additional State Pension in the past, your record may show a lower starting amount.

Check for any missing years. Common reasons include time spent abroad, low earnings, or gaps between jobs. You can usually fill these gaps by paying voluntary contributions. This is often worthwhile if you are close to the 35-year threshold. However, it is not always cost-effective, so always get a forecast first to see the difference it would make.

What If There Are Gaps in Your NI Record?

Gaps do not always mean a smaller pension, but they often do. You can request a payment schedule from HMRC to see how much it would cost to fill specific years. Voluntary Class 3 contributions are the most common way to top up. For the 2025/26 tax year, they cost £17.75 a week, or around £923 for a full year.

Before paying, do the maths. If you are 60 and need two more years for the full pension, the cost might be around £1,800. In return, you could gain about £460 extra per year for life. That is a payback period of under four years, which is usually a good deal. But if you are 70 and already claiming, it may not be worth it.

Also check if you are entitled to National Insurance credits. These can fill gaps for periods when you were caring for someone, unemployed but looking for work, or on maternity leave. Credits are free, but you often need to claim them.

How Your State Pension Age Affects Your Plans

Your State Pension age is not fixed. It is currently 66 for both men and women, rising to 67 between 2026 and 2028, and to 68 later. You can check your exact date using the government's online tool. This matters because you cannot claim your State Pension before that age, even if you stop working.

If you defer your State Pension, you get a higher weekly amount. For every nine weeks you delay, your pension increases by 1%. That is about 5.8% for a full year. If you are in good health and have other income, deferring can be a sensible way to boost your later years. But if you need the money now, claiming on time is fine.

Putting Your Forecast to Work in Your Retirement Plan

Once you have your forecast, use it as the cornerstone of your budget. Add up your expected State Pension, any workplace or personal pensions, and savings. Then compare that total to your likely spending. The gap, if any, tells you how much more you need to save or how long you might need to work.

Remember that the State Pension counts towards your Personal Allowance for income tax. If your total income from all sources is below £12,570 (for 2025/26), you may not pay tax. But if your State Pension alone is close to that figure, other income could push you over.

Review your forecast every few years, especially if your circumstances change. It is a living document, not a one-off check. With a clear picture, you can approach retirement with confidence rather than surprises.
